Grace - Daughter. Jefferson is based on the Mad Hatter from the novel, Alice in Wonderland. Jefferson works as a portal-jumper with the power of a special hat and has the ability to travel from world to world.

At Rumplestiltskin 's behest, he goes searching for a crystal ball and a pair of slippers. Only finding the crystal ball, Jefferson returns to the Dark One's castle to deliver it.

Prior, he also promised to assist Rumplestiltskin in a scheme to force one of his magic pupils, Regina , to move on from her past. Since she wishes to resurrect her dead lover, Daniel , and stubbornly refuses to give up, Jefferson mentions knowing a wizard from another world who can revive the dead.

In return for bringing this man to her, he asks for a royal pass to travel throughout the kingdom without restrictions, which she consents to. After the wizard, Victor , is brought to the Enchanted Forest, he examines Daniel's corpse, which is in suitable condition for the resurrection, and then hand-picks a heart from a vault.

As Jefferson and Regina wait outside a tent, Victor attempts the procedure on Daniel and fakes a failed revival.

While this leaves Regina heartbroken and left with no choice but to let go of her deceased lover, Rumplestiltskin gives Victor a heart as payment for his services, to which Jefferson then transports the doctor home through the hat.

During First Curse. He desires his reward for helping her, but she coldly refuses to honor their agreement as the deal became void since Emma didn't eat the poisoned apple.

Furious at being "screwed over" by Regina a second time, Jefferson threatens that their business is not finished, but she doesn't take his warning seriously.

Realizing there is still one other way to ruin Regina, he breaks into the hospital's psychiatric ward, drugging nurse with spiked tea, and frees Belle from her imprisonment.

While the girl is puzzled by his help, Jefferson simply instructs her to seek out Mr. Gold and tell him that Regina was the one who locked her away.

After First Curse. Assuming the boy wants the same thing as David, he once again refuses to help. Instead, Henry presses him about why he hasn't spoken to his daughter, Paige , yet since the curse has been broken.

Distraught over the possibility of bringing himself into her life again, Jefferson admits he feels guilty for having left to go to Wonderland and then being unable to return to her, but Henry persuades him that it's now or never.

After school dismissal as the students are let out for the day, Jefferson notices Paige walking in the opposite direction on the street.

He calls her by the name he has always known her as, Grace , to which she turns around, ecstatic to see her father, and runs into his waiting arms.

After an emotional embrace between the two, they walk off together. Grace is the name of Jefferson's daughter. Jefferson buys his daughter a white rabbit toy at the market.

In addition, the playing card Regina puts on Paige 's bike plate shows the White Rabbit. However, he left after the business cost him his wife.

Even though the character is often referred to as such, the term Mad Hatter is never actually used in Lewis Carroll 's novel. Production Notes The casting call describes him as "late 20s to Mid 30s, a rakishly handsome, former criminal who in Fairy Tale Land has given up his life of crime and dedicated himself to his daughter , while in Storybrooke he is a dangerous and mysterious figure who knows about the curse and attempts to convince Emma that it is real.

According to Edward Kitsis , the famous lead singer of The Rolling Stones had a "weird, sixties, sort of Edwardian feel to him". Fairytales and Folklore The Alice's Adventures in Wonderland novel does not specifically mention what kind of hat the Hatter wears.

In Chapter XI , the King of Hearts orders the Hatter to take off his hat, and when the Hatter states that the hat isn't his, the King of Hearts concludes that it must be stolen, prompting the Hatter to explain that he keeps his hats to sell and has no hats of his own.

The character's signature top hat comes from John Tenniel 's illustrations from the first edition of the novel, in which the Hatter wears a large top hat.

Props Notes When Jefferson is rescued from his car by David , he comes out of the wreckage clutching a stuffed bunny, [5] a reference to the White Rabbit and the March Hare from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Hatter", a reference to the character from the novel. However, all that can be seen of the Hatter on the show 's illustration, is his hat in "The Price of Gold" [7] in "The New Neverland", the Hatter has been cropped off.

The party guests at the table include a man in a hat. Gap-toothed and leering, at times he looks like Madonna after sticking a fork in a toaster.

How he finds his characters is anybody's guess, a sort of thrift-store warehouse of eccentricities, it seems like. But it works.

The character offers no captivatingly skewed bat-house psychology. There isn't much to him, really—he's just a smiling Johnny one-note with a secret hip-hop dance move—and so we start to react to him the way that Alice does to everything else: by wondering when he's going to stop making nonsense.

Frank Wildhorn composed the music to and co-wrote the music to Wonderland. In this adaption the Hatter is portrayed as a female, the villain of the story, and Alice's alter-ego and is a mad woman who longs to be Queen.

This Hatter Andrew-Lee Potts is portrayed as a smuggler who starts off working as a double agent for the Queen of Hearts and the Wonderland Resistance in the story; over the course of the story, he begins to side more and more with the Resistance, and ends up falling in love with Alice as he helps her along the way.

In the videogame American McGee's Alice , The Mad Hatter is portrayed as psychotic , literally gone "mad" and obsessed with time and clockworks, and considers himself to be a genius.

He invents mechanical devices, often evidently using the bodies of living organisms for the base of his inventions, as he plans to do to all of Wonderland's inhabitants.

He appears in Alice: Madness Returns in the same appearance, although this time, he requests Alice's help in retrieving his lost limbs from his former compatriots the March Hare and Dormouse.

The Mad Hatter is portrayed as a middle-school age boy in oversized clothes and a large hat that covers his whole head. Unlike most Wonderland residents, he acts rather bratty and rude to Ariko the "Alice" of the game.

In one of the bad endings, Mad Hatter is killed by a twisted Cheshire Cat. A spin-off of the traditional Alice in Wonderland story, Frank Beddor 's The Looking Glass Wars features a character named Hatter Madigan, a member of an elite group of bodyguards known in Wonderland as the "Millinery" after the business of selling women's hats.

The Hatter role is played by Blood Dupre, a crime boss and leader of a street gang called The Hatters, which controls one of the four territories of Wonderland.

Sir John Tenniel's drawing of the Hatter, combined with a montage of other images from Alice in Wonderland , were used as a logo by Charisma Records from onwards.

The hatter basically looks like a large top hat with flowery decorations similar to Break's top hat and a tattered cape.

When summoned, it can destroy all chains and objects from the Abyss within a large area. A minor character, he has been in the episodes " Insane in the Mainframe " and "Follow the Reader" as well as the film Futurama: Bender's Game.

In Once Upon a Time , the Mad Hatter is presented as possessing the unique ability to cross dimensions through his hat, and has a daughter, Grace, who lost her mother as a result of a past deal with the Evil Queen.

When the Queen offers him enough wealth to set his daughter up for life, he agrees to help her travel to Wonderland, but when it is revealed that the goal was for the Queen to retrieve her captured father, the Hatter is left trapped in Wonderland instead, as the portal will only allow two people to pass through it in either direction.

Trapped in Wonderland, he was then driven mad as he attempted to find another way back to his world to reunite with his daughter.

Note that very few people in Storybrooke before Emma arrives can claim to be happy with their lives; at best they are stuck in an unsatisfied rut, and at worst are completely miserable.

For Mad Hatter, though, the curse could do worse than just make him forget. It allowed him to remember that place, and his old life, and specifically the daughter that did not remember him.

He also remembered the power he used to have via his hat and knew he could never have it again. He also knew that, if he told anyone the truth, the curse would make them refuse to believe him, and just assume he was crazy.

From an out-of-universe perspective, this fits very well with the Mad Hatter theme: what is more crazy that a regular person claiming to be the Mad Hatter?

Note that this is similar to what happened to Maleficent: she was not turned into a normal, non-magical human that forgot her true identity, because that wouldn't have been enough.

She was kept in her dragon form, presumably well aware of who she was but unable to do anything about it. Its because the mad hatter is from Wonderland, not the enchanted forest.
